I have a 1984 Chevy pick-up with a 6.2 diesel engine. It recently stopped running. I took off the air cleaner and found a large amount of soot on top of and inside of my intake manifold. I have cleaned most of it out, but my truck still won’t start. I have used ether to try and start it, but it won’t fire at all.
Any ideas?

check the glowplug timer make sure they are getting power the 6.2 doesn,t have that high of a compression ratio if the time doesn,t send power to the glow plugs for a few seconds it won,t crank
also check the fuel shutoff solenoid for power
i just noticed you said you tried ether and it wouldnt start
well that eliminates the glow plugs and fuel system
so the only thing left is low compression
it sounds like you need to run a compression test on it
you don,t say how many miles are on it so i am assuming high
it is possible that it may be out of time (timing chain)
but sometimes those will break the crankshaft
if it doesn,t make any unusual noises when you crank it i would say you need a timing chain
if it was low compression due to worn rings it should have still cranked on starting fluid

take out a glow plug ..apply one little sqirt of either in it and have a person turn it over.. it sounds like your pump is gone

sounds like a bad turbo if you have alot of soot in the intake the gasket between the intake and exhaust side of the turbo is letting exhaust into the intake
