I would begin by looking for a vaccuum leak.... check all vaccuum lines, one may have come off or is split open, Your brakes run on vaccuum as well and my idea is when you step on the brakes it take vaccuum away from theengine that it needs to stay running.... could be tough to find the hose causing the problem - but also cold be very easy.. and as simple as cutting the line & putting it back on or replacing it.

You really need to take to a shop for inspection? Sounds like maybe a brake booster problem but if you did have that problem the brake pedal would e very hard unless you have hydro boost then this does not apply to your problem?
