Check the rubber bushings on your shocks, I had an 85 Blazer with a 454 and 4spd and every time I clucthed or mahed the gas while cruising under no load it clunked. Also Check the leaf springs, I had one of those break in an 84 Blazer with a 6.2 diesel and 4spd and it clunked almost the same as the shock grommet. The loose ring gear cradles sounds quite likely too as well as the pinion bearing. Jack the rear end up and support the frame so the springs stretch, look for cracked springs, worn or missing shock grommets, try to pull forward on the pinion yoke(it should have no thrust). The crush sleeve may not have been set propperly which would take out the pinion bearing as well as on and off the gas would pull the pinion in and out of the ring gear which could then in turn vibrate loose or stretch the carrier cradle bolts resulting in the scar inside the pumpkin cover. There are several possibilities but don't cheap-out on the repair, ring-pinion, bearings including both axle bearings along with carrier and pinion and seals. If there's metal filings the bearings are all nicked and scratched you would wind up replacing them soon after a half a** repair.

not to sure on this one what i would recommend with out the high cost of a mechanic would be to jack it up on the pig throw some stands under it and get the tires for them to spin pull the cover back off and start it put it in gear have a friend or you give it gas and then hit the brakes as the other person is watching the rear gears you may actually see some thing shift in there

sounds like your pinion bearing is going out.. allowing your pinion gear to move inside the housing, won't be long untill the whole unit fails. Get that bearing replaced immediately, and do a total inspection on all parts inside that housing, the metal from a failed bearing can get between the gears or axel splines and cause havoc. I've had it happen, and i had to replaced the entire rear end. You might just get away with the ring and pinion and bearing and seals if you wre lucky.

You need to coat the splines of the slip-joint of the rear driveshaft with the special lubricant that GM sells. Can't remember part # but it begins with 12345???. I used to use it for the SLIPJOINT clunk on my dodges. You remove rear shaft, clean oil off of splines and coat the splines with the lube.

There shouldn't be any markings on the diff cover from any gears, nor should any of the gears have "gouges" or other non-wear like markings

You might want to check for back-lash on the ring/pinion mesh, and ensure the ring gear is tightly seated.

Also, take a look at your leaf springs to make sure one isn't broken in the middle of the pack.

If there is a gash in the cover from the ring gear it has to be loose and moving arounf in there. Are the bearing caps tight. Does the ring gear move side to side. The bearings might be bad. Something is loose inside the rear diff. There should be no marks on the cover.

Replace bearings or check the universal joint for excessive play.
