I would look into a V-8 for more power. 350 or 400 CID. Also some light half tons had rear coil springs that would not carry much load. Do not use the rear coil spring unit for heavy towing. You not only need to think of power from the engine but having suspension strong enough to handle the weight , brakes strong enough to stop the added weight and a cooling system that will take the work without failing.
