If dist. was removed, replaced, etc.. You need to start for the begaining.

Pull dist. out, and #1 cyl spark plug (driver side front)

Put finger/thumb over spark plug hole.. Have a buddy to bump the key over.. You will feel air sucking or blowing on your finger..

When it starts to blow, stop bumping engine over..

Now use a breaker bar and 5/8" socket on damper bolt (center bolt of lower pulley) to turn engine clockwise by hand..

Untill the line on the damper, lines up with the 0 or TDC mark on your timing tab on the timing chain cover.

Now look down in the hole where dist goes. Use a flashlight.. You will see a rod in there with a slot it in.. Use a long flat blade screw driver to turn the rod so its straight across left to right.. Now twitch the rod so the drivers side of it is slightly pointing towards firewall and I mean slightly towards it. Not much off from center.

Grab your dist, turn rotor so it's pointing alittle clockwise past #2 and going toward #1 cyl (firing order is 1, 8, 4, 3, 6, 5, 7, 2 clockwise around dist cap)

Stick the dist down in the hole. It should fit down and rotor should turn a tad clockwise as it fits against cam gear and that should have tip of rotor button pointing at the #1 spark plug term on cap..

Hook up your wires and fire the engine up

There is a bypass connector either under the hood or below the heater box on the passenger side of the interior. The lable under the hood will indicate where it is located. (tan/black wire.) With the engine at operating temp. disconnect this connector. With a timing light set the timing to 0 deg.

first thing is you dont have a vacumm advance to disconnect! Now make sure number 1 cyl is at top dead center then adjust the dist straight on number 1 Start the truck and it should be good if so tighten the distributor tie down if not adjust the dist. slowly till you hear it running good then drive it and make sure you have no main chatter if so put a timing light on it! Good Luck

usuall you disconnect the spark advance hose from the dist and you hook up the ltiming light and move the distributor until the timing is around 8 or 10 BTC. See autozone website for free repair guide on setting timing.
