The engine wouldn't give you a problem, the bell-housing may not match up though. I'll assume you are talking about a manual trans swap. Check the bolt pattern, if possible, on your current transmission to the transmission you want to swap. Also check the length of the two transmissions to find out if they are the same length. Check the spline in your drive-shaft to see if it matches the input of your 5 speed. Check the transmission's front clutch splines to see if it matches your current clutch disc. If the transmission will bolt up, and is the same length as your old one, and the splines match, and the shifter comes through the floor in the same place, I think you'll be cooking. If everything matches except the trans to drive-shaft splines, you can swap the yoke to match.
Good luck!

The answer is anything is possible as long as you want to do the whole job. The thing is it will fit physically with the motor, but the driveshaft will be different. The crossmember and rear mounting will also be different. Also the old trans had vacuum shifting and a cable detent for shifting. The new ones have a PCM to get the trans to shift at the various loads and speeds. So yes you can switch, but there is plenty of work to do to get the new one to work. You might be better off looking for an aftermarket trans that will fit the bill without all the electronic issues.
