They are also a bit easier to bend around the trans crossmember. Most often you have to have one pipe go over the cross member and one pipe go under. If the pipes are run out the back you wont hear them as much in the cab, if they are run out the sides you will hear them more and the sound will bounce back off objects on the side of the road, if you just dump them under the bed it will resonate in the cab.
