That way they could use the original transmission. There is a 9 digit number on that engine some where and it is a derivative of the VIN. If the first digit is a 3 it's an Olds engine and the second digit will tell the year. They used numbers up to 79 and started with the alphabet in 1980 starting with A the next number is the assembly plant and the last 6 are the last 6 numbers of the VIN of the vehicle it came out of.
