To improve gas mileage their are several things you can do,
1 change your fuel filter
2 possibly change your igniter
3 spark plugs, wires and distributor cap if their is one.
If this doesn’t work, look at buying a SUV. Do your research on the SUV you want to buy and compare gas mileage.
I replaced my fuel filter and changed my igniter in my car and I got about 100 more kilometres out of my tank. It was a little costly but it worked.

Ford Escape and the Chevy Equinox would be two good choices.

Ford Escape manual is a good choice. Good gas mileage. If you only drive in the city, the hybrid maybe a possibility. But for a 50/50 use city/highway the manual is great.

Take a look at the Jeep Liberty or if you need more room, try a Grand Cherokee. Either way, you’ll be getting right around 20 miles per gallon (much better than a Silverado), dominant 4×4 capibility, and a veghicle that has one of the best resale values of ANY vehicle on the market, dollar for dollar. The other thing you may want to take a peek at is the Chrysler Pacifica AWD. Alittle bit more luxury, but over 94 cubic feet of cargo space, seating for up to six, over 20 mpg and a 5 star crash test rating.
Either way, dealerships are making INSANE deals on remaining 2006 inventory, so if you’re looking to purchase within a month, you’ll be sure to get a great deal on what’s left in stock.
Best of luck with your search!
