Engine has to be at #1 cyl TDC on the compression stroke.

Remove plug, put thumb over plug hole, have buddy bump key over till you feel air pushing against your finger..

Now stop and bring damper line to 0/TDC mark..

Rotor tip has to point towards the spot on dist cap where #1 cyl plug wire goes.

Then from there the plug wires goes clockwise arond cap in this order..

look for the firing order its on the intake, then just turn the crank to see which way the rotor turns and then just follow the firing order, the numbers for each cylinder will also be on the intake, thy should be just above where the intake mates with the heads. you have two t.d.c. one positive and one negative, just put a piece of rag (just make sure it doesnt fall into the cylinder) over the #1 and crank it will spit out the rag, gd lk

The rotor on the distributor should be pointing to #1 on the cap when the motor is on top dead center for COMPRESSION on #1 cyl which is the driver side front plug.. Now, it has to be compression stroke not exhaust.. The best way to verify this is to "bump" the engine over little by little with your finger over the hole on #1 cyl with the plug removed, as you bump it over there will be a pressure start to build on your finger... as soon as you here pressure releasing ,stop and turn the balancer(crank) the rest of the way to "0" on the timing scale. Now the distributor should be dropped in with the rotor pointing to #1 on cap making sure you have enough room to move distributor Clockwise and counterclockwise to gain the correct ignition timing...
From there you should be able to start the engine,,,, assuming that the valves are adjusted properly,, you did adjust the valves didn't you??

Hope this helps and good luck.
